I specialize in therapy with adolescents, young adults, adults, and families.
Adolescents
Adolescence can be a rewarding time of exploration, identity growth, and deepening of friendships. As most of us know through our own experience and/or through our kids’ experiences, it can also be a very difficult time of life filled with overwhelming stress, high expectations/competition, depression, anxiety, PTSD, low self-esteem, peer conflict, and much more. In addition, the internet, social media, video games, and other technological advances have added to the complexities of adolescence. I have extensive experience working with diverse populations of adolescents dealing with different life stresses, traumas, transitions, academic matters, and social issues. I also have specialized knowledge of treating many mental health disorders that can often present during this time of life. I am comfortable coordinating treatment with teachers and school staff when appropriate. I align with adolescents and join their team as we work together to help them achieve a happier, healthier, more balanced life.
Families
Often when I work with adolescents, I include at least one parent (or more family members as needed) in therapy. Most of the time, I only see a client once a week for one fifty minute session. The family then spends the rest of the week with the client. Therefore, I think it is imperative to include some form of family therapy when working with adolescents. However, family conflict can happen at any age and I work with families to process pain, improve communication, improve problem solving, and work together to heal and reconnect. I also have experience working with families who are struggling with divorce by helping them cope with these unique challenges as they transition into their new family story.
Young Adults/Adults
In the adult phase of life there are many freedoms and joyous life moments. It can also be a time of job burnout, losses of many kinds, isolation, relationship struggles, identity crisis, and more. These life challenges can trigger mental health issues that further exacerbate the pain and struggles in one’s life. I work collaboratively with adults in helping them process their stress, heal from past and current traumas, learn new skills to improve coping and functioning, and take actions directed toward becoming who they want to be.
Mental Health Specialties
I have worked with clients who are struggling with various mental health disorders. For all of the populations above I have experience treating mood disorders, anxiety disorder, trauma/stress disorders, inattention/impulse disorders, disruptive/oppositional disorders, and more.
Other Specialties
I also have specialties in providing therapeutic, supervised visitation between parents and their children. I have experience writing visitation reports and coordinating with social workers, lawyers, and judges. I also have a background in working with foster youth and foster parents, working with parents who have lost custody of their children, and working with children who are adopted.
